About the drug :Vasoconstriction is the narrowing of the blood vessels resulting from contraction of the muscular wall of the vessels. When blood vessels constrict, the flow of blood is restricted & pressure on the walls of vessels increases which results into Hypertension. The mechanism that leads to vasoconstriction results from the increased concentration of calcium (Ca2+ ions) within vascular smooth muscle cell.

Cdpine is a Novel Calcium Channel Blocker with both L & N type calcium channels blocking function. L & N Type calcium channels inhibition of Cilnidipine shows its superiority over other CCB as it decreases urinary protein excretion, Heart Rate & Serum TG in diabetics.

About the drug : Metoprolol is a beta-adrenergic blocking agent that is used for treating high blood pressure, heart pain, abnormal rhythms of the heart, and some neurologic conditions. Metoprolol blocks the action of the sympathetic nervous system, a portion of the involuntary nervous system, by blocking beta receptors on sympathetic nerves. Since the sympathetic nervous system is responsible for increasing the rate with which the heart beats, by blocking the action of these nerves metoprolol reduces the heart rate and is useful in treating abnormally rapid heart rhythms. Metoprolol also reduces the force of contraction of heart muscle and thereby lowers blood pressure. By reducing the heart rate and the force of muscle contraction, metoprolol reduces the need for oxygen by heart muscle. Since heart pain (angina pectoris) occurs when oxygen demand of the heart muscle exceeds the supply of oxygen, metoprolol, by reducing the demand for oxygen, is helpful in treating heart pain. The FDA approved metoprolol in August 1978.

About the drug :Olmesartan medoxomil is a prodrug, that is hydrolyzed to olmesartan during absorption from the gastrointestinal tract. It works by blocking the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptors in vascular muscle; it is therefore independent of angiotensin II synthesis pathways, unlike ACE inhibitors. By blocking the binding rather than the synthesis of angiotensin II, olmesartan inhibits the negative regulatory feedback on renin secretion. As a result of this blockage, olmesartan reduces vasoconstriction and the secretion of aldosterone. This lowers blood pressure by producing vasodilation, and decreasing peripheral resistance.

About the drug : Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker as the name indicates inhibits the transmembrane calcium influx in vascular smooth muscles & causes peripheral arterial vasodilation which helps to reduce blood pressure.

Atenolol is a beta blocker, B-Blockers inhibit & interfere with the action of stimulating hormones on beta- adrenergic receptors in nervous system. B-1 affect heart & B-2 affect receptors in bronchial tissue. Atenolol works by competing for receptors on cardiac muscle which slows down the heart’s contraction & reduces its oxygen requirement & preload.
